Derek Richard Thomas is an American singer, songwriter, and producer known for his soulful blend of rock, indie, and Americana influences. Born in Chico, California, and raised in Roseville, he rose to prominence as the frontman of the indie band Vista Kicks. The band toured extensively across the U.S. and U.K., opening twice for The Rolling Stones, and released four albums and an EP before going on hiatus in early 2023.

Beyond his work with Vista Kicks, Thomas is the founder of IN THE DRT Records, a label through which he has produced music for artists like Triona O’Neill & The Hail Maries. His production style emphasizes authenticity and emotional depth, earning him recognition in the indie music scene.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Thomas is passionate about environmental sustainability. He authored the book How to Make Soil, aiming to educate readers on the importance of soil health and its role in combating climate change. His song Common Ground has been released in association with the feature film on Amazon Prime Video “Common Ground.

He is also highly coveted public speaker, bringing Soil Consciousness to conferences around the world. Recently in Australia and Washington DC for the NEXUS conferences his ability to connect, inspire and drop people into their hearts has become a calling card for conferences who wish to invigorate into their audiences with performance and deep philosophical invitations.

Thomas's personal life garnered media attention during his relationship with actress Rumer Willis. The couple welcomed their daughter into the world in April 2023. Although they parted ways in 2024, they continue to co-parent amicably.
